System Operations

The cardinal mandate of GRIDCo is the operation and maintenance of the National Interconnected Transmission System (NITS) and operation of the Wholesale Electricity Market (WEM). These activities are to be done through effective and non-discriminatory dispatch and congestion management on the grid as well as an efficient and transparent billing and settlement function comparable with international best practices.

Our Mission

We operate the NITS and provide non-discriminatory wholesale electricity market operation by offering efficient, reliable and secure power system dispatch within Ghana and the West African sub-region

Our Activities

The Department serves as the lead coordinator to ensure a smooth grid connection process for prospective applicants. In that regard, the Department serves as a one-stop shop for prospective Market Participants, seeking information on how to invest in power infrastructure in Ghana.

We therefore work to make Ghana as attractive as possible to potential investors in the power supply market. We ensure that adequate and timely information is made available to stakeholders at minimum cost to enable them make their investment decisions.

We also manage real-time power system operation and economic dispatch of electric generation and purchased resources, to ensure the security and reliability of the power system and the balance of demand for electricity with supply. Additionally, we exist to develop and operate the WEM. The department coordinates maintenance programmes of transmission and generation assets to ensure optimum reliability of power delivery.

In our position as the System Operator, we interact with Regulators and coordinate activities that deal with the development and review of the National Electricity Grid Code, Market Rules and other policies.
