On Sunday, August 1, 2010, GRIDCo will be two years into its operationalization. It is my greatest pleasure to commemorate this august anniversary with all staff. My heartiest congratulations go out to all of you GRIDCo staff for your support and initiatives in getting us this far. I also thank the Board and Management for their support and service to GRIDCo.
Two years is well worth celebrating, but it is also good to remember that we need to keep our focus on building and strengthening our company and consolidating our gains at this early stage in the life of GRIDCo. There will be many more celebrations and we shall enjoy each of them as appropriate.
Management is encouraged by the progress we have made in developing and establishing our corporate structures and operational systems. I am confident that we will continue to grow from strength to strength, and nurture our company with a passion and take on the challenges as we enter our third year of operationalization.
The next few years will see some more reform and evolution of the power sector in Ghana and within the sub-region. For us in GRIDCo, it will be a future rich with opportunities to work with our colleagues in both the generation and distribution sectors to deliver top of the class quality service to all customers. In conjunction with the Energy Commission and other industry players, we will roll out the "market rules" for the wholesale electricity later this year, thus liberalising the market and deepening the opportunity for additional participants in the electricity market.
This brings up the question: how do we keep our leading edge status and continue to deliver quality service to all Ghanaians, and within the sub-region? It is by being competent, enterprising and efficient; working as a team with our local and foreign partners to maintain and expand the transmission network so as to position GRIDCo at the centre of the emerging West African power market. Management believes that we must stand together as one, dialogue and work as a team in a harmonious industrial environment. I believe that we will achieve success if we positively address our difficulties and unite to attain our objectives.
We also have to develop a deep understanding of the emerging dynamics in the power sector, customer needs, and enhance our strategies in engaging with them. This is how we will stay relevant and continue to justify our existence.
Undoubtedly, we need to increase our cooperation and collaboration with both the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and Volta River Authority (VRA) whilst expressing our appreciation for their support in these early years.
It is my singular honour to express appreciation to all staff who have over these two years made tremendous sacrifices to keep our operations going. In particular, I am grateful to all for using their personal resources of various kinds, whether it be vehicles, tools, laptop, personal computers or many other facilities to deliver on their work as a result of our many challenges in these early years.
To commemorate this anniversary, just as we did last year, GRIDCo will make a token donation to the Ghana Heart Foundation as our contribution to the excellent work being done at Cardio-thoracic Centre in healthcare delivery in Ghana. It is also a mark of our social responsibility to the greater Ghanaian community.
Please accept my best wishes of prosperity and success to all of you and your families and to GRIDCo in the years ahead.
Happy Second GRIDCo Anniversary! Long Live GRIDCo!
GRIDCo Forever! Charles Darku Chief Executive
