Chief Executive's Address at 10th Anniversary Durbar

GRIDCo Press

On Wednesday, August 1, 2018, Mr. Jonathan Amoako-Baah, the Chief Executive of GRIDCo, welcomed guests present at the Durbar organised to celebrate ten years of GRIDCo’s existence & achievements. An excerpt of his address is below:
“I am very honoured to welcome you all to this durbar to commemorate the Tenth Anniversary of Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo).
Our company emerged out of the Power Sector Reforms initiated in the late 1980s.The agenda that was developed for implementation of the reforms required changes in the legal and regulatory framework and also re-structuring of the Electricity Supply Industry (ESI).
The Energy Commission Act, 1997 (Act 541) provided for the establishment and exclusive operation of the National Interconnected Transmission System (NITS) by an independent Utility. Further to this the Volta River Development (Amendment) Act, 2005 (Act 692) separated the transmission functions of VRA from its other activities. The Independent Electricity Transmission Utility was thus set up to take over the transmission functions hitherto operated by the VRA. This Utility became known as GRIDCo.
GRIDCo became operational on August 1, 2008.
Our establishment was intended to develop and promote competition in Ghana's wholesale power market. Since the inception of GRIDCo, the number of IPPs at various stages of operations in the country has risen to eight (8). This is a testimony to the success of this strategic national institution. Through the provision of transparent, non-discriminatory access to the NITS for all the participants in the power market (particularly, power generators and bulk consumers), GRIDCo has brought about efficiency in power delivery, and has seen to the sustenance of supply to meet the growing demand for electricity.
Today’s celebrations have been preceded by a month long series of activities that included an inter-departmental quiz, health walks at various work place locations in the country, blood donation to key health facilities and an open day for second cycle schools. We will, in the course of today’s event, award winners of the inter-departmental Quiz and also award work group Areas that have performed very well in safety, good housekeeping, among others,.
The theme for this anniversary celebrations, ‘Power Transmission – Ten Years On’ reflects the metamorphosis that we have gone through.
In the ten years of our operationalization, we have seen massive injection of investments into transmission infrastructure across the network. From that day in August 2008, we have increased the number of substations from forty three (43) to sixty (60). Over the same period, the length of transmission lines have increased from four thousand (4,000) circuit kilometres to over five thousand, one hundred (5,100). Work Area locations have also increased from five (5) to seven (7) to effectively respond to faults. We note that over this period the number of generating stations have increased.  Power has to be effectively evacuated from these stations. The investments and scope of work and spread of our operations correspondingly increased our staff strength from four hundred and eighty (480) to nine hundred and forty seven (947) over the same period.
Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, we have experienced our ups and downs and yet achieved major milestones and awards during this short period in our life that has made GRIDCo continue to remain relevant in the power production value chain.
All these have been possible because of the solid foundation laid down by my illustrious predecessors, namely Engineers  Joseph Wiafe, Charles Darku, and William Amuna, together with the hard working members of our Board of Governors who provided the strategic leadership and directions that have brought us this far.
Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, once again I welcome all of you to our celebrations and pray that we will have a memorable event.
I will now plead with you all to join me on my feet for a minute’s silence in memory of all our colleagues who have passed on into eternity during this decade of our company’s life.
I thank you for your attention and may God make GRIDCo the model electricity grid Company.
Thank you.”
